Patient Lounge write rock songs about a simple belief: inside everyone there is an intense force of self sabotage, whose only goal is to hold them back from achieving, and being, the most they can. Feeling themselves constantly mired in self-doubt, procrastination, self-medication and bad excuses, Patient Lounge fight it the only way they know how: writing songs.
“I feel like we’ve wasted so much time trying to work out who we are, always scared of being us. Self doubt would take over and stop us from backing ourselves or getting anything done. It’ll always be there, ready to throw us off course, but the constant fight and struggle is what makes life worth living.“ - Zach Eather, lead vocals/guitar
Zach and his long-time musical collaborator Nick Keogh-Peel (drums), create stories through a unique fusion of rock, prog and modern pop influences to produce intricate alternative rock. Even in this sometimes eye-brow raising blend of sounds, the band has had to overcome their own self-doubt.
“It all started great with ‘All You Want’ debuting well with local radio in Brisbane, and a couple cool international support slots,” lead singer Zach explains, referencing their breakout first year. “After just 1 song out, to hit a couple East Coast tours and play with bands like Haken, Pop Evil and Wolfmother, we got this shot of ‘okay, there’s people out there who dig what we do’.
Then, the world ground to a halt as COVID-19 hit. Combined with poor management deals and booking agents who didn't care, again the self-doubt crept in as they asked themselves 'do we have any idea what we're doing?!' This was no more apparent than when asked the simple question, ‘what do you guys sound like’?
“God, I’m sick of that question. Why don’t you just have a listen and tell us?” Zach opines. “I mean, on some level it’s rock music, we’ve got the crunchy guitars and the loud drums and ‘Alice in Chains’-y vocals. But Nicks got ADHD so the time signature changes a hundred times a song, but if we say ‘prog’, immediately you’re picturing a sound that isn’t anything like us!”.
Ask their fans, and they’ll have a simpler answer: expect a sub-genre of alt-rock in every song. But it’s where their unique sound meets their ferocious, energetic stage show that the magic really happens, magic that has landed them slots at Dead of Winter Festival, Valley Fiesta, Bigsounds 2020’s Showcase, and a main stage slot at the prestigious Fortitude Music Hall as part of ‘The Other Festival’.
Patient Lounge are on the cusp of releasing their debut EP, and with their most recent single launch for accessible track ‘Treehouse (written when Nick and Zach were 14 years old) selling out within 72 hours of being announced, the groundswell of local support for Patient Lounge is obvious. It seems everyone who sees them live is left with no doubt, this stadium rock level act isn’t stopping until they’ve spread their message to everyone who needs to hear it: You're not alone with your thoughts of self-sabotage and self-doubt; and Patient Lounge is taking us all on a journey to overcome them.
